      Research Brownbag: Health Misinformation, Partisan Talk & Social Stratification

      Chen-Shuo Hong, PhD Candidate in the Sociology Department, presents his research, "Health Misinformation, Partisan Cheap Talk, and Social Stratification: A Survey Experiment."

      Health misinformation is an emerging research area and many scientific research has begun to quantify misinformation, examine its impacts on individual and population health, and propose solutions to limit its spread. However, it remains unclear whether the misconception on health issues is a truly genuine belief, or merely an expressive response in light of highly polarized U.S. society. This research project develops a survey experiment to explore trustworthiness of health misinformation. By reviewing literature on health communication, political misinformation, and recent research about the pandemic, I point out some important factors that affect the credibility of health misinformation. One of the most important factors is partisanship, while other types of stratification may also have an effect. The policy implication is to help design a better strategy to fight health misinformation.
