      Description

One of the first, and the oldest surviving vaudeville theatre in the United States, uniquely built, owned, and operated by an African-American, Monroe Bowers (Pink) Morton. The Morton Theatre hosted early acts such as classical pianist Alice Carter Simmons, Cab Calloway, Butterbeans and Susie, Blind Willie McTell, Ma Rainey, Curley Weaver and Roy Dunn. During the 1930’s, the theatre was modified to become a movie house. A 1954 fire broke out in the projection room, causing the theatre to close for the next 40 years. However, various street level businesses in the historic building continued their operations.

Restored by a citizen-approved sales tax program in 1987 and adapted as community performing arts space, the Morton re-opened in 1993 and boasts state-of-the-art lighting and audio systems framed in the simple elegance of its brilliant bluesy decor. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Morton operates as a rental facility hosting live theatre, music concerts, church services, weddings, dance concerts, receptions, seminars, awards shows, pageants, community events, and more.

The rehabilitated Morton Theatre, which seats 480, is a unit of the Arts Division of Athens-Clarke County Unified Government's Leisure Services Department, and is supported in part by the Morton Theatre Corporation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
