      Bennington Empty Bowls 2019

Bennington Empty Bowls is a collaborative effort between Bennington College Center for Advancement of Public Action (Social Kitchen: Ceramics, Food, and Community) and GBICS.This year's Empty Bowls event will be on Sunday, November 17 at MAUMS. Tickets will be available in advance and at the door. Children 6 and under can attend free.Every year, community members from 3 to 93 years-old make hundreds of ceramic bowls. The bowls are later used to serve soup and bread during a large community gathering. The goals of Bennington Empty Bowls are to: Increase awareness about the presence of hunger Raise funds for the Kitchen Cupboard food distribution program Bring the community together in a creative process The empty bowl is a wonderful metaphorical image. In Thailand, for example, Buddhist monks and nuns have a single possession: their bowl. Each morning, they knock on doors and receive a bit of food from each house. In this way, the empty bowl represents human interdependence, the truth that we only survive by giving and receiving.Over the last two years, Empty Bowls has provided and opportunity for GBICS to collaborate with Bennington College, where the ceramics department has offered a course entitled The Social Kitchen: Ceramics, Food, and Community. Through this course, students address the intersection of art practice and community around the topic of food insecurity. In addition to providing information about the local food insecurity, the event is also a major fundraiser for the Kitchen Cupboardā€™s food budget.
