      (Special Event)

Younger and older adults may, at some point, rely upon others for decision-making and care. The issue of abuse perpetrated by surrogate decision makers (i.e., powers of attorney, guardians, representative payees) has become highly visible nationally, yet no reliable, empirical documentation exists on the nature or extent of surrogate decision maker abuse. This presentation/discussion highlights how surrogates perpetuate abuse and the outcomes of the abuse on victims. Also discussed is how to choose the right surrogate decision maker and help him or her make decisions that reflect your values and intentions.

Pamela B. Teaster is a Professor and the Director of the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech. She is the North American Representative of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, President of the Board of Trustees for the Center for Guardianship Certification and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect and the Journal of Trauma, Violence, and Abuse Review. Her areas of scholarship include the abuse of elders and vulnerable adults, guardianship, end-of-life issues, ethical treatment of older adults, and public policy and public affairs.

The Center for Humanities at Virginia Tech presents a broad range of expert engagement with topics focusing on the human condition broadly conceived: from history to societal issues to performance to literature to the intersection of humanities and technology - all in an effort to promote informed engagement with topics that enlighten and broaden understanding of human experience, identity, and humanistic concerns about the world.

Please join us as we hold a series of pub talks where Virginia Tech faculty in the humanities might discuss the broad significance of their research in ways that connect to people from the community. There will be a brief Q and A following the talk.
