Apex Learning Community: Family on Mission

WHO PARTICIPATES IN A LEARNING COMMUNITY? Anyone who wants to learn how to live as Family on Mission — whether you are part Apex or another church family, whether you are part of an established house church or want to plant a new house church, or whether you are interested in discovering how your own family (single, married, kids or no kids) can be a family on mission. WHAT IS A LEARNING COMMUNITY? A Learning Community is a relational space for people to gather as family and to learn from one another in how to build a discipling culture that produces a missional movement to reach the lost and change the world through their house churches and families. We come together every six months for a two-day training immersion weekend which includes worship, teaching, training, coaching, and strategic planning. In addition, we spend lots of time building relationships over meals. Each house church team or participant develops a six-month strategic plan to implement in their own context what they have learned during the Immersion.  There are three major spaces: teaching space, social space, and huddle. Teaching space is where the main teachings happen with the entire learning community. Social space is a group of 20-30 people, processing and applying what we learn in the teaching space to our own contexts. Huddle is a group of 6-8 people gathered together to discern what God is saying to you and what you are going to do about it. WHAT IS FAMILY ON MISSION? At the October 12-13 Immersion, Mike and Sally Breen and Apex leaders will lead us as we explore what it means to be Family on Mission. When God wanted to act on his promise to save the world, he started with a family and gave them a mission. He spoke to Abram and his household and they became a family on mission. We see Jesus operating in the same way, gathering an extended-family-like group of disciples around himself before embarking on his mission. Jesus needed a family on mission. Within the Trinity, the unity of God is expressed in a diversity of persons — Father, Son, and Spirit. This means that at the very heart of God's nature is a family on mission. And thus God's preferred mode of operation has always been family on mission. Without that texture, discipleship becomes programmatic and mechanical, not really producing people with the character and competency of Jesus. The good news is that today, Jesus, our Brother and King, is wanting to empower us to live as covenant families caught up in kingdom mission. It seems that the Holy Spirit is moving us away from the destructive dichotomy and Family OR mission, where we can only do one or the other, away from the band-aid fix of Family AND mission, where we keep them separate and manage boundaries and margins, toward the integrated life of family ON mission, where we wholeheartedly embrace being part of a covenant community AND with those people, play our part in God's kingdom mission.Mike and Sally will share about their journey in leading a family on mission, as well as looking deeply at how Jesus built his family on mission in the Gospels, as well as practical strategies for growing as a family on mission, imitating Jesus as his disciples.
