Ship Dog Tribute & Book Talk

Salute one of the Great Lakes’ most beloved working dogs, Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes, July 19 in Ludington, Mich. Pay tribute to the famous ship dog who served on the USS Hyacinth Lighthouse Tender from 1914 until his death 12 years later when he was buried at sea off the coast of Ludington on July 19, 1926. His story is told in the new Wisconsin Historical Society Press children’s book, Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes. The event will begin with a noontime waterside tribute to Sport and the lifesaving work of the lighthouse tender ships that he and other ship dogs served. The tribute will include a 12:15 p.m. a wreathlaying by members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The event is free and open to the public, and guests are invited to bring their dogs (dogs must be on a leash!). Local baker Cosmic Canine Creations will dish up custom dog treats to canines and Giggles Goodies will serve Sport cookies to kids at this family-friendly event.

At 1 p.m., people will move inside the museum where author and retired children’s librarian Pamela Cameron will share Sport’s adventurous story—and the history of lighthouse tender work on the Great Lakes—in a book talk for all ages. There will also be children’s activities including a look at how prisms guided ships, lessons in basic nautical knot tying, and Sport coloring pages. Light refreshments will be served; a book signing will follow.
