Claiming Our Spiritual Leadership - Nov. 16, Montpelier, VT

This program is designed for religious professionals and lay people to build collective practice for collective action. Because shifts in congregational practice require sustained group effort, you are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop with a team of five or more. If you attended a previous workshop, consider attending with people who have not yet. Details below.  PRESENTERS: Your New England Region UUA Staff Team We live in anxious times riven by the effects of dominating culture on marginalized peoples and our planet. As Unitarian Universalists the call to make manifest our values of love and justice could not be more urgent. Many of our most common congregational practices were adopted in response to demands and preferences of other times, and seem incapable to lead and sustain us into the future. Grounding congregations in the practice of Spiritual Leadership can fortify us individually and collectively to meet the challenges this moment presents. People of faith who are interested in a transformed world are called to step into their Spiritual Leadership. Our souls need it. Our congregations need it. Our world needs it.  Already, hundreds of people from sixty-five New England Region congregations have been introduced to the concept and practices of Spiritual Leadership. As reflected in surveys, response from past participants has been enthusiastic: “Those who attended now understand their role in the congregation as a form of ministry. They are holding their leadership in a deeper way, in a way that is not task-oriented but a practice.” “This is one of the most exciting things I have encountered. In it, we are claiming Unitarian Universalism as a real religion.”  “Spiritual leadership helps people slow down and be intentional about the work that we are doing...we are going to be a little less urgent about everything.” “The program exceeded my expectations. It was the most useful program I have attended.”  “Can I do it again? So much to reflect on!” [Our response: Yes! see details below.] Spiritual Leadership is an orientation and practice by which individuals and congregations create, sustain, and restore Beloved Community in which everyone experiences belonging, wholeness, greater equity, and an increased willingness to risk on behalf of our values.  Spiritual Leadership is needed everywhere — our homes, schools, places of work, neighborhoods, communities. The call to claim Spiritual Leadership is not just for “leaders” but for everyone.   As covenanted communities, congregations are perhaps especially suited to nourish and support it.  Consider attending if you and your congregation are looking for ways for congregational life to be:  less about volunteer chores and more about soulful engagement with your faith; less about the worry of not having enough volunteers, money or time and more about finding energy and meaning in the gifts already present; or less about the business of church and more about the transformative power of communities living their values in ways that challenge dominant culture — both within and beyond the congregation. As the New England Region staff designs programming that goes beyond an introduction, we continue to make this introductory workshop available so Spiritual Leadership becomes an embedded congregational practice.
