GREAT SMALL WORKS perform "We Love Trees"

Trudi Cohen and John Bell of GREAT SMALL WORKS perform their new work "We Love Trees," a new toy theater collaboration with musicians Marji Gere and Dan Sedgwick along with two other works -- "Ode to Common Things" and Living Newspaper, Episode Two: Sidewalk Ballet. "Ode to Common Things" is a cranky ("paper movie") based on the poem by Pablo Neruda. Living Newspaper, Episode Two: Sidewalk Ballet is a paper theater play inspired by the conflict in the mid-1960s in New York City between developer Robert Moses and community activist Jane Jacobs. The words of biblical Moses himself help us understand the importance of public space. Spoiler alert: community activists win, and Washington Square Park is saved! The show will feature live music by the Anything Goes Trio: Will Green, Marji Gere and Dan Sedgwick GREAT SMALL WORKS was founded in 1995 as a collective of artists who keep theater at the heart of social life. Drawing on folk, avant-garde, and popular theater traditions to address contemporary issues, the company performs in theaters, clubs, schools, galleries, streets, and other community centers. Based in New York City, they produce performance works on a wide variety of scales, from outdoor pageants with giant puppets and hundreds of performers from diverse communities, to miniature toy theater spectacles. At a variety of New York venues, including Performance Space 122, Judson Memorial Church, and Theater for the New City, the company continues the twenty-eight year-old tradition of Spaghetti Dinners, variety evenings (founded on the Lower East Side in the late 1970s by veterans of Vermonts Bread & Puppet Theater) that include music, live performance, political discourse, and vegetarian spaghetti. GREAT SMALL WORKS productions consistently reinvent ancient, popular theater techniques: Toy Theater, mask and object theater, circus, sideshow, and picture-show (cantastoria) to name a few. On any scale, GREAT SMALL WORKS productions seek to renew, cultivate, and strengthen the spirits of their audiences, promoting theater as a model for reanimating the public sphere and participating in democratic life. About the musicians: Formed in 2009 for a Great Gatsby-themed library party in Hull, Massachusetts, the Anything Goes Trio has been playing the Methodist Church Supper circuit ever since, performing favorites of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and many others. Featuring Will Green, vocals; Marji Gere, drums; and Dan Sedgwick, piano. Marji Gere (violin, puppetry) and Dan Sedgwick (piano, puppetry) first played music together at the Apple Hill Summer Chamber Music Festival in Nelson, NH, sometime around the turn of the millennium. In the ensuing decades they have collaborated on numerous artistic projects, performing chamber music with ensembles large and small, creating original pieces of chamber music theater, co-piloting the music and puppetry collective known as An Exciting Event, and directing Around Hear, a free concert series and educational program in the Mystic River Development, a public housing facility of Somerville, MA.
