Multiple Ones: Contemporary Perspectives in Printmedia

The 20 contemporary printmakers in this exhibition dispense with artificial boundaries around their technique in order to make participatory art for the digital age. They demonstrate how prints can inhabit three dimensions like sculpture or sprawl across a wall like a painted mural. In the exhibition, prints are rendered on porcelain, recycled wood and melting ice; set down within the toxic residue of contaminated water from Flint, Michigan; and inked sideways onto the edges of paper that is less than a millimeter thick. The prints are built like puzzles or planted as a garden, conceived of as architectural designs or living things. All of these prints are somehow manipulated—cut, folded, burnt, fired, mounted—in ways that underscore the printmakers’ familiarity with time, space, gravity and pressure.

The exhibit is made possible by the generous contributions of the Janet Dibble Revocable Living Trust. Featured artists are Justin Barfield, Shawn Bitters, Vanessa B. Cruz, Florence Gidez, Rebecca Gilbert, Ruthann Godollei, Sheila Goloborotko, Brandie Grogan, John Hitchcock, Andrew Kozlowski, Lauren Kussro, Nathan Meltz, Guen Montgomery, Jill Parisi, Andrew Raftery, Samantha Parker Salazar, Marilee Salvator, Mizin Shin, Swoon, and Eszter Sziksz. Curated by Goloborotko.
